After Dr. Aranha returned my amulet, I marched through the gym to meet with Dr. Cormack. Nurse Wilson was in his office when I arrived. On the desk between them sat my file and a blue plastic bin with the cover off. Before I could peer inside it, Dr. Cormack spoke.

“Have a seat.”

I did.

“I’m taking a few vital measurements while you discuss things,” Nurse Wilson said. “Pay me no mind.”

That ended up being easier than it sounded. Instead of shining lights in my eyes or squeezing my arm with an inflatable cuff, Nurse Wilson used purely magical methods to examine me.

“We’ve worked out two strategies to try for accommodating your ADHD. The first is intended for use while testing.”

He reached into the plastic box and took out a small purple case. Inside was a set of what appeared to be wireless earbuds. When he shook them onto the palm of his hand, they got harder to see.

“These are umbral earbuds. They’ll damp down ambient noise so sounds like flipping pages and scratching pencils won’t distract you. They will, however, allow sounds like fire alarms and the teacher’s voice through.”

“That’s brilliant.” I chuckled. “But I have no money. How much are they?”

“You’ve got an IEP. They’re on loan like a library book. So, no using them over the summer or taking them on vacations, for example.”

“Good to know, thanks.” I put the earbuds in their case, then zipped it into the interior pocket of my satchel.

“You’ll need them for a remedial quiz each Friday your first month back. It cuts into Rec a little, but it’s a requirement for any student on academic probation.”

“If I’m in there by myself, what do I need earbuds for?”

“One other student in your section is on probation, too.”

“Who?”

“Cosmo Gitano.”

“Then I’m in good company.” I felt relieved if a little bad for my friend. At least we could be study buddies.

“I believe I’ve got a dosage range pinpointed, Kyle.” Nurse Wilson said.

“Good.”

“Thought we were waiting on meds.”

“Mundane ones are a last resort for shifters and changelings.” He pulled a small black chest from the box, decorated with several gemstones. “Inside this is an enchanted bracelet, made by combining psychokinesis with water and earth magic. It balances dopamine and norepinephrine. Amanda can explain how it works in practice.”

“You wear it here at school and off-campus while studying. Activities where, without focus, you’d otherwise struggle.” She tapped each of the gemstones in a pattern I couldn’t follow. “It’s not meant for constant use.”

“So it’s okay to not wear it at gym or out with my friends. Got it.”

“Don’t wear it to bed, either,” she added. “Or for an hour before that. Some people take it off for meals because they say it reduces their appetite.”

“If that sort of thing happens, or you feel too focused, come and see us,” Dr. Cormack advised. “We’ll also need to adjust the levels for the next month, so you’ll need to visit my office thrice weekly until we find the right settings for you.
